Aegaea Listed as Qualified Surveyor for Storm-Hit Properties in Leicestershire

Aegaea designated by Leicestershire County Council as a qualified surveyor for DEFRA property flood resilience repair grants following Storms Babet and Henk.

By Nick Darling-Drewett

Aegaea has been designated by Leicestershire County Council as a qualified surveyor to conduct property flood assessments for homeowners impacted by Storms Babet and Henk in October 2023 and January 2024. The county estimates over 500 properties sustained damage from these events.

The local authority administers a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) property flood resilience repair grant program offering up to £5,000 for remedial work.

Application Process

The grant requires a property survey identifying flood sources and recommending protective measures. Before site visits, surveyors review third-party data from the Environment Agency, British Geological Survey, Local Planning Authority, and Lead Local Flood Authority.

During the visit, the surveyor discusses previous flooding incidents, water entry points, flow patterns, and duration. The team then outlines potential risks and initial recommendations tailored to the homeowner’s priorities and budget constraints.

Homeowners may prefer water exclusion strategies (preventing water entry) or water entry strategies (improving recoverability). The surveyor ensures recommendations align with budgetary capabilities.

Following the assessment, a detailed report documents flood risk from all sources and summarizes discussed recommendations. The grant allocates £800 (VAT-inclusive) of the £5,000 for surveys.

Cost Savings Opportunity

Neighbours applying jointly for consecutive surveys may achieve cost savings.

Surveys must comply with BS851188 Code of Practice for Property Flood Resilience. Aegaea surveyors completed foundation training administered by the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

Aegaea is similarly listed on the Suffolk County Council website for PFR grant surveys in that region.
